Griffith Company completed the Brea Canyon Road Grade Separation on time in October 2008. This project is one in a series managed by the Alameda Corridor East (ACE) Construction Authority. The project allows Brea Canyon Road to run underneath the Union Pacific railroad. The reason for the project was to provide a faster means of delivering goods from the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles to states east of California. The general public benefits by seeing the elimination of congestion on Brea Canyon Road and the loud train horns from passing locomotives. In addition, smog will be reduced to help the environment. The first order of work was to relocate utilities within the excavation. This involved borings and open trenches for wet and dry utilities. The railroad remained active via a shoofly that was constructed and diverting its path around the work area. Upon completion of the utility relocations, the concrete structures were built. The retaining walls were built on spread and pile footings. The bridge is a combination of precast girders and concrete deck. Following the structures, the paving and hardscapes were constructed. The surrounding properties received new parking lots with revised curbs and driveways. The last order of work was landscape and irrigation. Trees and other foliage were planted in the new medians, sidewalks, and planters. Griffith Company was active in utilizing the partnering program with the agency.
